CCTV is of course highly important from a security standpoint. It's main function is of course to record footage of a certain area or premises to ensure that no crime goes on within them. For example if you own a shop then CCTV will be installed to enhance security and to prevent theft. However there are many other advantages to owning CCTV, and even when it comes to the security purposes there are more than one way in which it works to heighten security and safety. Here then we'll look at some of the myriad ways you can benefit from CCTV.

Crime prevention: CCTV is highly useful for crime prevention as it increases the chance of the perpetrator being caught. This way if they simply see that you have CCTV in the area, they will then automatically be less inclined to try and steel from you, and will more likely move on to another, easier target.

Aiding police investigations: Aiding police investigations is another important use of CCTV. Here if a camera system fails to prevent a crime from happening in the first place, it will hopefully still record enough of it that you can aid in the police investigation. This will then increase the chances of the perpetrators being caught, which in turn will increase the chances of you getting your money or goods back, and decrease the chances of a repeat offence. If nothing else it will help remove a menace from the streets thereby helping the local community, and will give you some sense of justice if they get a sentence. At the same time your CCTV might even help to aid the police in an unrelated case – should a mugging or fight occur on or near your premises.

Preventing theft from the till: CCTV isn't only useful for preventing crimes committed by outsiders – just as often it can help you to prevent and catch criminals within your own organisation. This might mean people steeling cash from a till, or steeling private information about the company (and even forms of company espionage).

Proving innocence: Just as a CCTV camera protects you and your company, it should also be there to protect your staff. This will mean it can be used to prove that they didn't steel from a till for example preventing you from wrongly accusing them. Similarly it might prove useful in a court case if your customers or clients accuse your staff of having miss-sold something or stolen from them. It can also protect your company from accusations of on-site injuries both from staff and from visitors. In this sense it is both defensive and protective.

Saving money: While you might pump a lot of money into your CCTV, if that money is spent wisely then this should always be an investment. As CCTV prevents lawsuits, vandalism and theft this will mean you have to spend less money as a company re-investing in products and materials or repairing damage and going to court and this will mean that the CCTV pays for itself many times over.
