How Carbohydrates Affect Your Diabetes

There are many benefits for diabetics to include carbohydrates in their diet because carbohydrates will keep your body sensitive to insulin which allows more stamina. The carbohydrates are the only part of the food that will have an affect on your blood glucose levels.

This means that when you eat carbohydrate foods, they break down into glucose that then raises your blood glucose levels. Insulin is released into your blood stream from your body, which is where the insulin clears the glucose from the blood and moves it into your muscles, which is how you gain more energy and stamina; it also returns your blood glucose levels to a normal level.

Being a diabetic, you need to make sure that your diet includes carbohydrates. You need to make sure that you know how much you eat, when you eat, and the type of different carbohydrates you eat. There are two main ways that you can work out what quantity of carbohydrates your body needs, and these are:

* Carbohydrate counting, and

* Carbohydrate exchanges

Carbohydrate counting is simply the amount of grams that is contained within the food that you eat, the way to find out these amounts is by looking on food labels, carbohydrate food tables, or simply by measuring from your experience.

Carbohydrate exchanges is identified as the amount of food that generally contain 10 or 15 grams of carbohydrate, for example:

* 1 slice of bread

* 1 small piece of fruit, and

* 250ml glass of milk

The sources of carbohydrate that are in our diet come mainly from plant foods and some of these include:

* Bread

* Cereals

* Grains

* Potatoes

* Rice

* Fruits

* Vegetables, and

* Legumes

The fat intake in Australia has decreased as the threat of coronary artery disease is caused by high cholesterol. Unfortunately, 60 per cent of Australians are over weight or obese, therefore, we need to eat more protein as this is the main reason for these high instances of obesity. This is caused by eating too many carbohydrate foods like sweets, soft drinks, pastries, cakes and biscuits.

It is not only beneficial but essential for diabetics to implement a low carbohydrate diet. The one food that makes your blood glucose levels to rise is carbohydrates, so if you want to avoid the nasty complications of diabetes this is vital.

By making sure that you add the right amount of carbohydrates into your diet you can avoid complications and achieve optimum health.
