It's official! The Arthritis Foundation recognizes the fact that using hot tubs or spas can actually alleviate some of the pain associated with arthritis. In fact there are a great number of people with arthritis who are already using the mystical powers of the warm water to help them move around and exercise. Obviously you should consult your own doctor first before trying any new treatment.

If your doctor gives you the green light to start exercising in the hot tub, may I suggest that you do some warming up first. If you have been unable to move around for a while, the last thing you want to do is shock the body. Even if you have been keeping fit, it's important to loosen up at the beginning of any exercise and to wind down at the end. Unfortunately many people make the mistake of not preparing their bodies and end up with pulled muscles or even worse.

Exercising in a hot tub requires a strategy with goals. The key is to start with small movements and slowly build over a period of time, at your own pace. Don't put yourself under any pressure initially, just slowly settle into it and enjoy the experience. This will keep you motivated to continue the therapy and persevere.

Consider the fact that for anyone suffering from arthritis, to move around with little discomfort in a spa, hot tub or even a swimming pool is in itself a miracle. The reason behind the easing of pain is that there's a gravitational pull to the earth we live on and that is largely alleviated once we are submerged in water. In addition, the warm water causes the blood vessels to expand, allowing more blood and oxygen to flow to the muscles and skin not to mention the heart.

Like most things, follow the rules and the guidelines set out by your own doctor to avoid bringing on any other problems. Contact the Arthritis Foundation to research the correct way to exercise in a hot tub or better still, consider joining a class in your area if possible. More often than not, you will find that the benefits to your health from using hot tubs or spas will be greatly improved and the feeling of movement without pain, a joy to behold. Just a little warm water when exercising can go a long way on the road to better health.
