Walking your dog can be fun or challenging. Maintaining control over your dog in a more humane way increases the pleasure of the walk. This is especially true for the larger breeds of dogs that could literally pull you off your feet while pulling on a traditional collar.
Buying a harness for your dog is quite simple. Measure your dog around his chest right behind the front legs. Measure around the dog's neck. Use these measurements to help you select the right size for your dog.
It is better to get one that is a little larger and adjust it down to fit, than to get one that is too small. If you have a growing puppy, make sure it can grow with your dog. You may need several during your puppy's growth cycle.
To make sure the harness fits correctly, make sure you can slide your fingers comfortably between the dog's skin and the webbing. It shouldn't be so loose that it slides around too easily. A comfortable fit will be tight enough, but not too tight.
When you introduce the harness to your dog, do so calmly. Help the dog associate it with pleasure. After you put it on, give your dog a treat as a reward.
Using a harness keeps your dog safe. It is much harder for a dog to wriggle out of than a collar. This prevents your pet from running loose and possibly being hit by a car.
As you walk your dog, keep her attention focused on you. Talk to your dog. Give treats when she behaves well. Stop walking when your dog starts pulling. Let your dog know you are the one in control of the walk.
Consistent training is important. Remember to keep it fun. It won't take long for your dog to learn to be a fun companion on your daily walks.
Walking your dog can be enjoyable or challenging. Sustaining control over your dog in a more gentle way enhances the pleasure of the walk. Jim Witt suggests trying a dog training harness from Country Brook Design.
